I’m about to order one of these with an extra arm so I have 3 keyboards.

Just wondering which additional arm to get?

The A arm is straight and B arm seems to tilt 15 degrees...

Anyone with any experience, cheers ?

Companion to EQP1A that is not an MEQ5?

Hi all,

I'm currently mixing a (Foo Fighters style) rock song using 1073 EQ clones on the mix buss. A little resonant bump at 60Hz with HPF engaged @50Hz. A little mid boost to bring clarity and edge to a wall of electric guitars at 3.2kHz. A little 12K boost for sheen.

I can't use my EQP1A clones for this because they can't boost both 3.2K and 12K. An MEQ5 would work. I could also cut some low mids with the dipping frequency. I don't think I'd find the low peaking frequency that useful however and would prefer an HPF there. I also don't want to shell out say $1,400 for a pair of AML ezMEQ5s for one little mid boost.

My question is: what could I get to do a quality mid boost (at 3.2K in this case) so I could leave the EQPs on the mix buss and free up the 1073EQs? :cowbell:

I'm not overly impressed with the SMD options like Trident 80BEQ. In fact, I'd love to see a fully discrete, inductor based EQ with just an HPF and one or two +/- mid bands for this task.

New Summing Mixer vs Small Vintage Console?

Many of the threads on this topic are old. Let's say my budget would be approx 7k max, pref more in the 3k-5k range unless the unit would bring something 'truly special' to the table. Probably don't need more than 8 ch for the music in question, fewer if I only sum busses. Looking for the most vintage 70's tone possible. Would be in conjunction with analog reel to reel, Burl B2 ADC, and a few racked channel strips for tracking.

Looking online right now just to get a sense of what consoles are going for, I see Neve 54 completely refurbished for 7k, several Studer 96x mixers and the occasional 169 for 5-6k, Chandler Mini-mixer for 5.5k used, Glensound MX6/3 for 4k, Inward Connections and Tree Audio summing boxes for about 4k used, Fat bustard mk1 and Audix MXT mixer for 3.5k used each, recapped Yamaha PM1000 for 3.3k, a mini Calrec and Neve 5106 for 3k, used nicerizers starting at like 2k. In between are various sizes of CAPI summing buses, and lots of allen and heath, occasional soundtracks consoles. I'm guessing that either tube or solid state would work fine in this situation as I use both at various points in my recording chain.

where's the sweetspot of payoff to price in options like this? Is this the place in the studio where it pays to spend big, or save that cash for other stuff? vintage will obviously need repair at various points, but it is the tone I'm going for.

Thoughts?

Affordable sub: Velodyne Impact 12 or Yamaha HS8s or Presonus Temblor T10 or...?

Hey Slutz,

Finally moved to a bigger room (yay!) and since I'm doing lots of techno I'm looking for a subwoofer to go along with my beloved Dynaudio DBM50s.

Here are my options and some initial impressions:
  • Velodyne Impact 12 mk2: not a "pro audio" sub but they do have a reputation on making good subs, just not sure if it applies to this particular model.
  • Yamaha HS8s: heard it a few times and thought it was "meh" but alright.
  • Presonus Temblor T10: never heard it but was very impressed with their latest monitors Eris XT monitors so I'm willing to give it a try.
  • Behringer Nekkst K 10 S: never heard it, reviews are sort of mixed but mostly good.
  • Mackie Mr10smk3: same as above.

I know JBL had a sub on their LSR line but I can't seem to find it anywhere, so it's not looking like an option at the moment. Market is pretty restricted here so it's hard to find anything other than the options above, at least anything that I can afford anyway, but please suggest other models and I'll do my best to find them.

So, what do you slutz have to say on the matter?

And no, getting bigger main monitors is not an option, I love the Dynaudios and I want a sub!

And yes, I'm aware of the all the implications of implement a sub. :cowbell:

Cheers rockout

Looking for a Reverb Plugin

Now im looking for a reverb that mimics the reverb in this rim shot right here:
https://clyp.it/ppfpfs4d?token=bbb26...33bf51c1039bfa

I have literally tried so many big commercial reverb vsts and none can match that same ambience in that rimshot. Like they all sound like there in a room and cathedral where the sound waves reflect back, but in the clyp.it drum sample it just sounds like its an ambience with no walls or anything and it just sounds so clean

Learning Curve Frustrations

Hey Guys and Gals,

I've been working on a "demo" that's evolved into 4 songs, an intro, and an interlude for over 5 years. The whole thing has been an extreme learning process and I've probably re-recorded it 10 times over. The songs are mostly edited sans vocals but I've been struggling with some mix and master tests. I just can't seem to get them to sound interesting and dynamic. They are also relatively quiet compared to reference mixes.
Currently I'm using SSD4 for the drums, podfarm for the bass tones, and Nameless suite for the guitars. I also invested in a Radial reamp box and sm57 but the reamping results have been a little so so. I'm using Reaper as my Daw and running Yamaha H5's through a Focusrite Scarlett 18i20. I also have some JST plugins and play around mostly with Clip, Finality, and Transify. For mastering stuff I've been using the reaper provided plug ins as well as Drawmer S73.
I'm not shooting for perfection, I just don't want it to sound embarrassing! I've listened to tracks by people who are using similar gear/plugins as me and they sound way better than anything I've got to yet. Ive also contemplated sending them out but I really want to learn so I'd rather do it myself but feel like I've kinda hit a wall.
I added a clip from one of the songs, I'm def embarrassed about it at the moment so be kind! I'm also very green so I know I have a lot to learn, But any advice that could point me in the right direction would be very much appreciated.

Stereo Tube... ala Silver Bullet

I’ve decided to go all analog on my 2buss... I already have analog frontend. I’m Definitely picking up the Silver Bullet for the API and Neve flavor, but, I’d also like an old school american tube desk flavor as well...

Suggestions?

Thanks!

Pre the preamp!

Evening all,

I'm not exactly new but my baseline is very low...

I've just decided to update my setup after about 20 years of using Delta 1010s and am now massively behind the curve. I'm looking to get a new audio interface immediately having moved to Windows 10 and currently without, I made the mistake of buying a liquid saffire 56 only to find it won't work on later win 10 build so am now starting again.....

My question is - I use a SPL gold channel as my main pre-amp, can I just run the out of this into an audio interface that also has a preamp? I'd expect it to then get coloured by the 2nd pre? or is there a way to bypass the pre in modern audio interfaces (I've never used a unit that is both the preamp and AD-DA - forgive me!)

I want to get the most bang for buck, ideally be able to get two independent headphone mixes out somehow Ideally I only need 2 inputs as I record drums through midi (bfd3).

Grateful for your answers and recommendations on what to buy (budget £400-£500. I've read the top ten lists but if anything it's made me more confused - too many top tens and conflicting reviews!

thanks for everybody's time

Nicky

Version of Analog Lab included in Arturia KeyLab Essential 49

Can anyone please tell me what version of Analog Lab comes with KeyLab Essential 49 keyboard controller. I see some advertise version 2 but it is currently at version 4 so I am wondering if there's a further cost to upgrade from v2 to v4?
(I did contact their support help with the exact same question but their answer was it comes with "Analog Lab"!)

Squire Modified Thinline any Good?

I'm an acoustic player but once in a while I get out my solid body American Tele and noodle around. However, I've always liked the sound of Thinline Teles with the humbuckers but can't justify the cost of the 70s models. So...what are people's opinions of the Squire Modified Tele Thinline. If it will stay in tune and has OK intonation I might use it on an occasional recording but will mostly be just for fun to get that Thinline flavor. Yea or Nay?

When Pelicans are too much: What are you using for car transport to small gig?

$

I have three or four differently configured small rigs I bring out, depending, from the same well of gear, so sadly I'm always changing what goes into the rack, cases and misc utility bags/backpacks. Looking to update the things I pack the gear into, as some is ready to bite the dust.

As far as gear transporting goes, if I can't fit it in my Camry and carry them myself into the gig, it's too big to use. I'd love to invest in some small, solid local transport cases, but most of the good stuff is too bulky and adds more weight to the carry than I'd hope. I don't fly these things so I don't need baggage worthy. And I'm the only one handling it, which is good because it doesn't have to survive someone else's handling, but bad because it does need to be carryable by just me. Decent quality medium, but not heavy duty.

I'm looking into repurposing fairly strong and light, molded, suitcase style foam or divider sectioned cases that are not as heavy duty as Pelicans but still suitable for local schlepping. I say repurposing because nearly all of what I'm seeing that's marketed for gear is just too Pelican-like, overkill, as is anything used I find that pops up.

What kind of medium duty, (hopefully sectioned but that can be DIY'ed) cases are you all using for small gigs? Thanks for any direction in this. Much appreciated : )

This kind of economy case would fit the bill. Anyone have any experience with these?

I don’t want to EQ and compress just because working in a DAW, I have complete access to it all so, should these tools be used ONLY when needed or start playing the track and go to town with EQ’in everything, every track?

Audient ASP800 vs Tascam 8p Dyna Specs Question

$

I know there are many comparison request out there, but I have one more. I'm having a hard time deciding between the Audient ASP800 and the Tascam 8p Dyna.

I've ruled out the Focusrite due to windows driver issues, motu's more inexpensive stuff due to specs, RME due to price point. It's down to 2 (unless y'all have other suggestions!). I need 8 preamps for now and will later buy the matching interface (ID44 or 208i). It's about $550 more for an Audient vs Tascam set up (interface and preamps). Worth the difference?

I've listed the specs in the attached spreadsheet and tried to match them up with their respective categories. I know specs aren't the only consideration so happy to hear other ideas, but regarding the specs, they look pretty close with the exception of the cross-talk numbers. They seem to be reported differently. Can anyone let me know if I'm missing something or are these two options about the same technically? Other considerations? BTW, I don't think at this time I'll use HMX or Iron, or the analog compression on the tascam. Maybe later, when I get better, but I really just want a very clean recording. Would love some guidance on this please.

Audient 800 and Apollo x8p

I looking for some input and suggestions. I am up grading my studio and plan to purchase an Apollo x8p. I also want to add an additional 8 XLR inputs. I am considering the Audient 800 to meet this need. Will this work or are there better options I should consider?

How much non-Music media (TV, Films, Video Games, Books, ) do you consume on average?

$

Whether you're a kid at your parents and this is just a hobby, or you're a seasoned veteran, or anything in between, I'm curious about how much time folks spend consuming other types of Media.

For example:

I know some Musicians (or whatever term makes you comfortable, ha) who more or less never watch Television, rarely see any Movies, and beyond some music forum or maybe a gear manual they haven't read a Book in years.

Whether a matter of focus, or just personal preference, they're almost entirely caught up in all things Music and Music Production.

I know others who step in and out of Music and the rest like changing T-shirts, doing it all, almost daily, some Video Games in the afternoon, watching some trendy TV Show with their partner wach weel, whatever, they consume it all.

I'm mostly curious to see if there are any clear trends amongst the members here, and how you all think other types affect your Music making or not. Maybe the News is distracting or depressing. Maybe time is short and you must pick. Maybe focus relates to better output. Or maybe breaks equate to better output.

There are no wrong answers.

How do you split your time, and why, and how does that impact your Music making, if at all?

Do you use different colored Patch Cables for different things?

Like (rando made up example):

Red = Pitch CV
Black = Gates
Yellow = Clocks
Blue = Mod Sources
White = Audio

etc.

I'm seriously thinking of moving to a similay way.

Your thoughts and experiences so far?

Thanks.

How to deal with phasing with double tracked voice? Loosing my mind.

$
0
0
This is the first time tackling a "proper" double tracked main vocal - for an entire album as concept

By this I mean that I've done it extensively in the past, but as a cosmetic effect, not as the main driving force of a song. Everyone really loves the results because they were "artistic" - like having "bad" takes hard panned, or one of them heavily EQ'ed and with verb, delay, dist … you get the point

So now I've got a project on my lap that I'm sweating protrusively, as initial rough cuts to play with are stealing my sleep.

Singer timing & tuning is actually pretty damn good, no perfect. Still haven't done pitch and timing correcting, but that is not even the point.

I've been hearing stuff ranging from one side of the spectrum like Elliott Smith to extreme opposite like Die Antwoord, and I am floored. I simply don't get it.

Everything I try sounds phasey as f***.

The only quasi-acceptable result was one song with very loose lyrics, where I micro-edited, hyper aligned and heavily compressed beyond my will, yet still not happy - and far beyond everything I hear

Help! I am out of my wits - advice welcome

I want to run a library that's spec'd for 6.1.1, and my NI support only shows me Kontakt 6.0.1....
