Insulation Material Help

$

0
Hi all,

I have a question regarding the right insulation material available in my country (Netherlands).
If you can find the time I would be very thankful for some advice!

I would like to buy the material at Hornbach, in which case I have three options.

1) ROCKWOOL RockSono Solid (45kg/m3) 100mm thick. 15 kPa.s/m2

2) ROCKWOOL RockSono Base (35kg/m3) 50mm thick. 10 kPa.s/m2

3) ISOVER Sonepanel (not specified, calculated from description 14.5 kg/m3) 45mm or 60 mm thick. 8 kPa.s/m2

The first option has the right density, but is very thick. This means I would most likely stack two panels to get 200mm. I’m worried that at this thickness the absorption starts to suffer, which I’m judging based on modelling using the porous absorber calculator.

The second option is thinner, and I could stack I to 135mm or 180mm. It is less dense though.

Option three is much less dense. Still ISOVER claims to have very good absorption values (better than the ROCKWOOL examples). This does not fit together with the result of the absorber calculator. Is this a valid option? How can I understand this?

The absorption values are attached in the images below.

Thank you so much!

Venue installed SPL meter/display, options?

I'm working with a new venue, designing a sound system and advising them on acoustics.

One thing I'd like to add is an SPL meter that I can use to place a mic somewhere mid-room but have the display at the FOH position.

Does something like this exist? Ideally, this would be either just a rack mount LED meter or tablet sized RTA style display. Thinking I could either use a measurement mic hung from the ceiling or a PZM on a wall half way down the room.

Behringer Bugs on new releases.

I am no Behringer hater.
I am very happy they are releasing new old synths and their own designs.
But it seems all their recent releases have major bugs on release.

Are the buyers the real beta testers?
Why aren't the issues addressed when sent out to people to test them? Are they sending them to the wrong people?

I saw the RD-8 has a trigger issue. If that was non fixable in a firmware release, I would pass on it for the 909 release or 999 - both of which I am interested in.

I am now hesitant to purchase anything until bugs are addressed.

Apart from that (and that products don't drop worldwide at around the same time) I like them and Uli for posting here for us.

Home Studio disposition with small room (w/ planimetry)

Hi everyone! New one here. (also excuse me for my english 'cause I'm a spaghetti eater): So, I'm an Audio Engineering student, and it's time for me to turn my room into a """decent"""" home studio; I have bought some decent stuff for now, at least for me (Focal Alpha 65, Grado SR60, SPL Crimson, various **** to produce with), but I need to assemble my work area, and I really have no clue, so I decided to use one of the few skills that my high school diploma as surveyor left me to drew my room and ask clues to you guys:

- 1st Pic, how it is now

- 2nd Pic, how I would change it

So, I was thinking about removing my closet and putting the desk with monitors and pc where the closet was (like in the 2nd picture), so I would have the long side of my room parallel to me, and more space behind. My Basses and Bass amp would go where my desk was. Is this a good idea? Is there a better disposition for my room?
Also, I need to buy acoustic panels, but like I said above, I don't know where to start: which ones, how many, where to put them etc.. I have read some things online but they were all a bit too generic, so I don't know.. Can you help me? (or just appreciate the planimetry of my room, I can accept that too)

Thanks!

DIY Plug for Eliminating Unplugged-Cable-Buzz

Hi All,

For reasons I won't go into, I need to allow instrument cables to be left plugged into guitar amplifiers without causing hum.

I realize silent cable plugs can address this, but they are not compatible with the TRS jacks on active instruments.

My concept is a simple end-of-line device. A female plug with no wiring attached, only the silencing circuitry built in.

My question: What is the most 'silent' circuit for this? It is a simple shunt from hot to ground? Will that cause a spike in current and a 'THUMP' when the plug is detached, due to sudden grounding of built up capacitance? Would it be better to solder in a 10k resistor to approximate the load of a guitar pickup and allow any 'open pin' voltage to drain slowly to ground? Is there any additional circuitry or TRS-style trickery that might help keep the apparatus silent whilst plugging and unplugging? And most critically... any 'Gotchas' to avoid damaging my amplifiers?

Finally, I'll address the 'WHY' so I don't get a ton of 'dude, you don't need that' responses.

My band uses headset mics and in-ear-monitors. We can't afford wireless units, so we have built our own 'multi-cables,' which carry all our 'wearable' signals within personal flexi-pet covered assemblies, which attach to our belt loops with a mini-carabiners. The 3.5mm in-ear-monitor jack is therefore always at our belt loop, and the XLR mic input is on a belt clip right next to it. Instrument leads emerge from the assemblies and terminate with 1/4" plugs so we can plug in our instruments. (Check out Rockon audio's website. They make similar cables, but without mic inputs.)

However, I often put down my bass and play keys (leaving the bass instrument cable lead shoved into my jeans pocket, where it will hum if not muted. What's more, I occasionally play Chapman Stick. This requires a stereo signal. This means that there is usually at least one unplugged lead in my pocket. What's more, the guitar player often switches to bass when I play keyboards. This requires a second signal path for him as well, as the bass signal needs to bypass his guitar pedal board and connect to a separate line input.

Yes, we could buy individual mute pedals and try to keep them all muted when not in use. (Never happens 100%.) We aren't looking to spend more. Just trying to solve something at minimal cost.

General question about the swedish guys

Im trying to understand how thier tracks so heavy and are still anthems in the scene after so many years

Is thier melodies that strong or is it the dark atmoshoere they give
Or maybe the Tracks are just basic and its all in my mind

But really how are the tracks so so full and epic

Melody and chords
The bass the pads?
Or like the sounds they pick are just Top quality tons of layers and drums layering

And is it alot mixing wise that make it
Because i try so hard on my tracks 50 channels in the first 4 hours and it still doesnt sound that next lvl
I there with my tracks but cant figure the extra stuff im missing
The one that makes the track be like dammmmmmmn thats fire

Can this be a good HW alternative to Korg Wavestation (because there's a VST that does the job well enough) and Roland D50 (because, again, there's a quite good VST by Roland) as a late 80s/early 90s ambient/new age digital synth addition to my otherwise all analog hardware setup?

And is 200 euros a good price for it?

SSL Alpha-Link SX versus DAD AX-32 AD Line Ins

$

Hey all,

I need another informed opinion before I go out on a spending spree:

I currently have an SSL Alpha-Link SX. I also have the DAD AX-32. How much better AD conversion does the DAD AX-32 Line Ins really provide? How quantifiable is it?

The dilemma is to either keep the SSL Alpha-Link SX (which actually offers 24 channels of AD conversion) and AES Out into the DAD AX-32 or put my eggs on one basket and get two Line In AD cards for the AX-32 (for 16 ins) but flog the SSL unit.

The main use is to feed a Marantz 7703 into the AX-32 for Dolby Atmos playback.

Atari question: RS232 port?

$

(looks like the last time i asked about this, it got sent to 'music computers' with 0 replies)

i have this 'Advanced Gravis' MIDI Adaptor box... it has a Games port cable - connects to PC games port/joystick port, and a box with MIDI in/out/thru, and 2 joystick ports. weird funky junk i came across, never used - but then i thought: is Joystick/Games port a type of RS-232? could it in any -simple- way be made to work with an Atari? - i read once about one of the rear ports being adaptable as an extra midi port (not sure which one, didn't get it to work). maybe it's just a matter of wiring a different connector to the joystick cable.
? (idle trivia question, do i keep it and mod it, what can i do with it, etc.)

Touchmix 16 Volume

I've had the Touchmix 16 for appx 3 weeks now and can't figure out if there a way to give me more volume. Whenever I gain stage, the gain knob is almost at full, for whatever mic i plug in. Instruments, like my GR55 are pretty loud, but none of the mics are. I pretty much get the mic gain level to 4 0'clock for the meter to hit zero, the mains fader is up to zero as well and I move the mic's channel faders up to zero and it's still not very loud. I would think it would be too loud that I'd have to turn it down. I have two K10's that I have set to what the Touchmix suggested, which is setting the speakers' volume knobs to about 2 o'clock (or three clicks past zero). It's still not very loud.

At practice, we're not loud, but I still have to move the mains fader past zero.

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I couldn't find anything without having to go through hundreds of conversations.

Thanks in advance for the help! Btw, I'm new here.
