I presently have a C214 which I'm reasonably pleased with for vocals and acoustic guitar. I'm thinking about one of the current C414 mics as an upgrade to gain the multi polar patterns and possibly an improvement or slightly different character of sound than the C214. From AKG's info the XL II is recommended for vocals (slight freq bump towards the top end) and both the XLS or XL II are equally recommended on acoustic guitar. While the manufacturer recommends the XL II for vocals, I'd like to get a sense from folks that actually may use either which one tended to work well for a deeper sounding male vocal in particular. If neither worked and maybe they both kind of sucked, what mic in a similar price range did you find may have been a better choice, even if it didn't have multi polar patterns (AT4047 and AT4050 I've seen mentioned here frequently?)
Preamps I'd likely be using... ISA One, Summit Audio 2BA-221, or an ART Pro Channel
