I'm learning about room science by reading threads here on GS but I'm more concerned with How It Sounds. I'm in the process of completing my home studio/ mix room. The floor and drywall is done and I've started hanging my 703 panels. After plugging in my Protools rig, I decided to run a few sweep tones. A few bumps and dips were evident as the tone went by.
After pulled up the Signal Generator plug in and starting at 20 Hz, I slowly clicked the adjustment to the right which adds around 7 Hz each time. It was very interesting to hear the loudness change across the different frequencies. Big bump up and 126 and then big bump down at 135. I brought up a synth plug in and played notes on a bass patch. My room loves a "C". It's loud.
So basically, if I'm mixing a song in the key of C, I'm likely to not have enough bass in the mix. If I'm mixing a song in the key of "null", I'm likely to have too much bass.
Now, what to do about it.... Seems like the consensus here is to add more bass traps. I currently have a 2 x 4 x 4" 703 panel in each corner. I'll probably add a couch also which should help. I'm pretty set on my mix position though I can move forward or back. Currently I'm sitting at the 38% position. Not sure how much moving the mix position will improve things. Moving may improve one frequency but it seems it could make others worse at the same time.
It's interesting to me to actually "hear" the science.
