Static buildup and DAE dropouts

I have an odd one in another local studio I have been doing some tech work for.

Basically it seems like there is some static buildup going on that is causing Pro Tools to loose the interface. When the engineer steps away from the desk for a while, moves mics, etc. then touches the Control 24 or patches something, you will get a pop and Pro Tools will need to be restarted to reinitialize the interface.

BTW, this is a Control 24 with Pro Tools TDM and a Digi 192. TT Patchbay with tie lines.

They did have some old 888's, and I was thinking there might be some leakage from the rails (a stretch) or some component age. We went ahead and swapped it out for a set of Mytek converters and connected them to the 192 via ADAT.

It seemed to go away while I was there. But of course it didn't last long.

Have any of you ever seen this before? Any ideas? What to look for?

I am thinking grounding the patchbays. But to what? They should already be grounded to power. Same with the Control 24 and interfaces. But maybe running a line from the chassis to a power ground?

There isn't any shorts in the tie lines or patchbay cables, thinking those may have a stray wire causing like phantom power buildup or something.

Should I check out the 192 for a bad cap or something causing charge buildup or improper ground protection?

Any thoughts at all would be very helpful. I hate doing these bizarre intermittent type problems.

Thanks in advance!
