Hi all,
After about five years of post-band implosion doldrums, I've started to collect recording gear again - mostly GS-vetted stuff like the MXL v67g, Electro-Voice 635a, and the CAD M179 - and, this time around, I have the modest funds to build up a modest prosumer studio situation. However, I still have a few leftovers from my first cheapy go-around: in this case, a paperweight of a Tascam 424MKIII Portastudio (Tascam can't/won't replace its adapter), a skittish Fostex MR-8, a good ol' SM57, an SM58, a broken ART $30 Pre, and, most confoundingly, a Nady SCM-950 condenser. I have plenty of experience with the rest, but the condenser - a boxy, muddy thing whenever I hooked it to the ART many moons ago - is a bit of a mystery; I can't figure out if it's moddable and, even connected to the PreSonus Studio Channel and Studio Projects VTB-1 that serve as my main pres, it still sounds like an iffy capsule swaddled in a wool muffler. On top of that, the interweb's returning a bagel on this thing, so I don't even know if it can be futzed with or if it's a secret dark amp whiz or what. I've toyed with it a little, but its uses are obscure to me.
SO, a question: Is anyone familiar with this thing? Can it be modded into something better, a la other Nady 900 series mics? Does it have a secret recording power that I'm not imaginative enough to figure out? I'm up a creek on this guy - it doesn't SEEM useful, but I'm a studio packrat at heart; I don't want to give it up for dead quite yet.
