Cleaning up my tracks

So I know that this has been discussed before, how to get a clean track. Well I want to hear what you guys think about what I'm workin on and how to get what I'm looking for.

The music I write usually falls into a "new age" sort of feel. The album Yanni Voices is similar to my taste. There is lots of music going on, strings, keys, and brass along with a drum and a bass guitar and it sounds like everything has its place. The vocals are nice and clean. The music is out there and nothing is muddy. Everything is as clear as a sunny day.

My latest track that I made had a little bit of everything. However, the final mix sounds so muddy. When the vocals come in it seems like they cancel out a lot of the music. The short spicc strings aren't as punchy and the synths are not as much out there anymore. Same happens with the drums. So what are your tips?

I haven't played too much with compressors on certain tracks and just learned about bus mixing and routing (sending certain tracks through a second bus before the master) could that he the answer?
