USB Midi controllers vs Virus TI USB

I have spent the last 2 years out of the game so to speak, but I had a bad head injury. Since I have recovered, something in me has spurred me to want to make music again...

So I've dusted off my Virus TI which has literally been sitting in the box. After upgrading it to the latest OS etc and plugging in to my mac etc I have found something which I think is quite significant. I always found like others the TI sounds different over USB. On closer inspection when recording some chords in Logic I looked at the visual sloppiness between note events that were to the best of my ability played simultaneously. Before anyone gives me the history of midi being serial etc etc, I fully understand this, and to begin with I was thinking that was the reason, and of course being over USB.

However I decided to get out my Emagic AMT 8 and try recording the same thing through that via standard midi cables from the TI. The difference in timing accuracy was night and day... Obviously there's always microscopic delays but it sounded tighter by a massive amount. Going back to USB and the Virus, I found the more notes I played simultaneously the more the timing of the notes deviated, to the point it was like a waterfall of notes in if I held 10 notes. This is not to do with the Total integration stuff I might add. This is just outputting midi from the TI keyboard to the DAW. It's not latency either as I'm just looking at the midi data.

This leaves me with an issue, is it the Virus, or is it all USB midi. As my space is limited my AMT8 isn't viable to work with all that cable clutter. I was looking at a Roland A49 or equivalent USB midi controller, but I don't want to drop the wonga if I'll have the same issue as this as I want tighter timing.

Has anyone here got any experience in the Virus TI via USB or if not can have a quick test. I have setup my DAW as Access advise in their manual.

I'm asking here as I don't want the usual reaction from Access of it being a setup issue - I'm open minded as it might be, but you guys are far more balanced here. heh

Alternatively, is this just the way it is over USB, if it is, then that sucks real bad to the point of it being really unusable for fast, accurate playing.

Happy new year to y'all.

Mike
